Harald Wiesmann was born on the 22nd of April 1909 in the city of Krefeld, then part of the German Empire. Adolf Hitler came into power in January 1933. The same year Wiesmann joined the Nazi Party and the SS. In October 1934 he began his service with the Gestapo, the Nazi secret police. In September 1935, Wiesmann completed a course for criminal investigators and at the beginning of October 1936 he was officially appointed to this position. The Second World War began on the 1st of September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. In October that year, Wiesmann was appointed as chief of the Gestapo office in Kladno. In the city he was nicknamed “The God of Kladno” and his wife Gudula worked in the Gestapo office as an administrative assistant. Harald Wiesmann, one of the main figures behind the Lidice massacre, was executed 2 days after his 48th birthday on the 24th of April 1947 in Pankrác prison in Prague. He was buried in an anonymous pit at Ďáblice Cemetery in Prague where the bodies of Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík – the assassins of Reinhard Heydrich in 1942 – had secretly been buried in a mass grave.
