The victims, a man and a woman, were employees at the Israeli embassy in the US capital and were killed after attending an event at the Capital Jewish Museum.
Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, announced the deaths in a post on X.
“Two Israeli embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington DC,” Noem wrote.
Tal Naim Cohen, a spokeswoman for the Israeli embassy in Washington, said the two staff members were shot “at close range” while attending the event.
Pamela Smith, the Washington police chief, said a single suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez, 33, was in custody.
Smith said Rodriguez was seen pacing outside the museum before the shooting and that the suspect chanted “Free Palestine, Free Palestine,” in custody.
Smith later told reporters that Rodriguez had identified where he discarded the weapon, and that the weapon had been recovered.
