Pope Francis has died aged 88 after contracting pneumonia, ending a tumultuous pontificate of 12 years in which the Argentine pontiff championed liberal causes, shook up the Church’s bureaucracy and clashed with conservative Catholics.

Taken to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 with a bout of bronchitis that had left him gasping for air, Francis’s condition soon worsened as doctors diagnosed pneumonia in both lungs.
On February 22, the Vatican said he was in critical condition after suffering a long asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high flows of oxygen. Within days doctors were cautiously optimistic as Francis showed slight improvement and was able to work and meet officials in the hospital’s tenth-floor papal suite. On Friday February 28, however, he suffered a “rapid worsening of his breathing,” the Vatican said, forcing him to use a ventilator mask to breathe.
