Everyone “knows” Tylenol is the safe one — the painkiller doctors hand to pregnant women and newborns without a second thought. Dr. William Parker, a chemist and scientist with over 27 years studying immune dysfunction and autism at Duke University, says that assumption may have triggered the autism epidemic. In this conversation he lays out the case: acetaminophen doesn’t cause autism by itself — only in biologically susceptible kids (roughly 3%), and only when combined with oxidative stress — but in those children the evidence is, in his words, overwhelming. He compares it to fetal alcohol syndrome: a drug that’s harmless until your own body converts it into a toxic metabolite, and the most dangerous window isn’t pregnancy at all — it’s labor, delivery, and early childhood, when a newborn deficient in the key detox pathway (the same one that makes Tylenol lethal to cats) gets dosed through the mother. A Johns Hopkins cord-blood study, he says, predicts more than half of autism cases from acetaminophen levels at birth alone. And the vaccine question everyone fights about? His answer reframes it entirely: parents saw a real regression after shots — but the missing link was the Tylenol given for the fever, not the shot itself. Parker also gets into the professional cost of this work — his lab shut down at Duke, retaliation over publications — and the statistical errors, peer-review failures, and conflicts of interest he says have shaped the medical consensus. Dr. Parker is also known for a very different discovery: he figured out the function of the human appendix.
