Hit TV show and beloved video game ‘The Last of Us’ features a ‘Cordyceps brain infection’ that turns affected humans into cannibalistic monsters – but could it happen in real life

Cordyceps is a real-life genus of fungi that includes around 600 known species, many of which are parasites to insects and other arthropods.

While the fungi are able to manipulate and consume insects, humans have been using them for medicinal purposes and as a sexual stimulant for hundreds of years.
