In US news and current events today, Brooklyn College Sociology professor Alex Vitale is breaking down why police ‘reform’ isn’t enough to address systemic racism.

After the police killing of George Floyd sparked a global uprising of Black Lives Matter protests and George Floyd protests, the world has a new understanding of police brutality, police racism, and police violence. Many in the BLM movement are calling to defund the police, while others want to abolish the police entirely. More moderate supporters have are behind police reform, laws that in theory should demilitarize police and root out systemic racism and violence. However, many communities have already enacted such reforms, and they have not largely improved the situation. Campaigns like 8 Can’t Wait and others, many argue, do not go far enough in address police immunity, police unions, and the entire culture of policing that has transformed from protecting communities into seeing them as the enemy.
