In US news and current events today, Mexican officials used pepper spray on a migrant caravan including women & children during their detainment of 800 migrants, as part of Mexico’s increased crackdown on Central American migration.

The caravan had entered Mexico from Guatemala on their way to the U.S. border. The National Migration Institute reportedly transferred them to an immigration center in Tapachula. The Institute said it was still looking for another 200 people who evaded detention. The group that was detained is part of a larger caravan of 4,000 people that originated in Honduras.

96% of Honduran migrants reported economic hardship as a reasons for their migration, according to 2016 data. Gang violence also continues to be a larger safety concern. Several migrants in the group were given forms to declare asylum status. Hundreds of others were set to be deported, according to Mexico’s National Migration Institute.

President Trump has threatened Mexico with tariffs if the country does not increase efforts to curtail migration within its borders. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who took office in 2018, has promised to increase Mexico’s efforts on the issue.
