‘Governments worldwide are threatening peaceful activists with massive fines, prison time, and physical violence.’ — Here’s how ‘ag-gag’ laws hurt animals, target activists, and prevent transparency to protect the massive farming industry.

Matt Johnson, Press Coordinator Direct Action Everywhere, was born and raised in a town of 4,000 people in rural Iowa, where pigs outnumber humans 7 to 1.

“Even though many of the folks I grew up with make a living from animal agriculture—and my family is full of Trump-loving, gun-toting hunters and farmers—they care about animals and taught me to value compassion and kindness,” says Johnson.

Rosewood Farms is owned by Iowa State Senator Ken Rozenboom, a loud and proud defender of Big Ag. Just last year, Rozenboom pushed the state’s latest “ag-gag” statute through the state legislature — which means people like Matt could spend up to 2 years in prison for merely taking pictures inside a farm.

An overwhelming majority of Americans support food transparency, whistleblower protection and compassion for animals. And even in Iowa, where big ag is king, the public opposes ag-gag laws by a margin of three-to-one.
