Leigh Blake: People were terrified of people with HIV. So it was a really difficult time. But it was exactly the right time to do what we did.

Activist Leigh Blake sparked global change for HIV/AIDS treatment. Activist Leigh Blake has been a hellraiser for decades with a focus on humanitarian issues and poverty. Her work started with the HIV/AIDS crisis.

In 1990, Blake co-founded the Red Hot organization, a music initiative that went on to raise millions of dollars for HIV/AIDS research and education.

With the funds, Blake created a pediatric clinic in Kenya in partnership with New York University Medical Center. Blake co-founded Keep A Child Alive with Alicia Keys. Since 2003, it has raised more than $28M for HIV/AIDS treatment.

Blake: Alicia and I embarked upon a really extraordinary piece of activism involving President Obama. He announced that in fact President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief was going to treat 2 million extra people. And it was incredible. It was such an incredible joyous. Win for all of us.

In advocating for kids, Blake also saw a need to support mothers. She’s currently focused on Fund a Mom, a project she launched in India to raise money for single-moms in extreme poverty.
