This 13-year-old will be granted Italian citizenship after his heroic actions saved 50 children in a bus hijack Ramy Shehata was one of 51 students on a school bus when it was hijacked by the driver.

The driver doused the bus with gasoline and collected the students’ phones. Shehata reportedly said he hadn’t brought his and was then able to call Italian authorities to alert them of the situation and the bus’ location.

The Carabinieri, Italy’s military police, were able to get everyone off the bus before it burst into flames. Officers who took Shehata’s phone call said his actions ‘essential for the rescue.’

Shehata’s father immigrated to Italy from Egypt in 2001, and made an appeal for Shehata to be rewarded with citizenship. Though Shehata was born in Italy in 2005, he was never given official citizenship documents. Government officials said they will expedite Shehata’s citizenship and cover any costs associated with the process.
