A gunman opened fire on worshippers during Friday prayers at Masjid Al Noor mosque. A second shooting occurred at Linwood Masjid Mosque. Four people were initially taken into custody after the shooting one man was charged with murder. None were previously known to the police.
CHRISTCHURCH RESIDENT, YASMIN ALI: ‘We heard of all the fatalities, family friends, people we’ve known for 19 years, dead.
You don’t think something like this could happen in New Zealand – Christchurch of all places. We’re such a small community. We’re so kind and loving so I don’t understand why someone would hurt is like this in such a way. … I don’t know if I’m going to be safe walking by myself wearing my headscarf. And I’ve never felt that way before.’
The main suspect is a 28-year-old white supremacist Australian. He published a 74-page manifesto praising far-right mass killers including the shooter at a Black church in Charleston in 2015. The manifesto focuses on the idea of white ‘replacement,’ echoing chants at a far-right rally in Charlottesville. He live streamed the shooting to multiple social media platforms. Officials warn social media users not to view or share the video.
