Nearly 1,200 children were killed by guns in America in the year since the Parkland shooting. Teen journalists came together from across the U.S. to tell their stories.

March 2018

Malaysia Amori Robson Dew, 1

Mary Claire Molloy / Student Reporter: She was shot and killed by two men wielding AR-15s. They shot over 40 bullets into her home, and one struck her, killing her as she slept on the couch. And they were angry about a social media feud which led to the shooting.

April 2018

Nasjay R. Murry, 18

Auhjanae McGee / Student Reporter: She was a pre-med student at Bradley University, after turning down Brown to stay in-state and be closer to her family. She was going to be the first of them to graduate college. She was the oldest of three children and looked after the younger two. Her high school principal described her as a quiet, hardworking student who wanted to impact her community. According to her cousin, she loved the band New Edition.
Nasjay R. Murray was declared dead on Sunday, April 8, 2018, after she was shot at a party the night before in Peoria, Illinois.

May 2018

Demetrius Jefferson, 4

Demetrius was a huge Avengers fan and loved Iron Man. His family says the only child always ‘offered up hugs’ and affection regularly freely. He died from a gunshot wound to the head on May 7th after accidentally setting off a gun he found in his Virginia home. Family laid out an Avengers blanket at his vigil in his honor.

June 2018
Amariah Kimbrew, 15

SOT: Baptiste Eaves: She was described as a “loving, silly girl who loved to give hugs.” She was in the backseat of a car with friends at Kwik Trip store #950 getting gas when she found a gun in a backpack and started messing with it. Others nearby heard a loud bang and suspected the car had broken down. Only after the screaming began in the front seat did they realize that something had gone terribly wrong. Amariah Chante Kimbrew, 15, accidentally shot herself in the head and died on June 13, 2018, in Madison, Wisconsin.

July 2018

Floyd Davenport, 15

Floyd was born weighing just 1 pound 10 ounces. His parents were told he wouldn’t live past a day but he fought through and grew to become a big sports and video game fan. Floyd was accidentally shot in the chest on July 15 after he and a friend were playing with a pistol.

August 2018

Malik Murphy Sayeed, 18

Malik had plans to attend Augusta University and become a dentist. He was a member of his high school track team and an honor student. Malik was found dead from gunshot wounds after a triple shooting inside his home. His parents were also injured.

September 2018

Mina Kim, 11

Mina Kim was an artist, along with her 10-year-old brother. She wore ‘wide-framed, cat-eye glasses’ and was in middle school. Mina was also the face of her school news network She and her brother Andy were shot and killed by their father who also killed their mother in a murder-suicide. The children’s own artwork was displayed at a candlelight vigil for them.

September 2018

Delmonte Johnson, 19

Delmonte was active in his church’s choir in Chicago
and loved to play basketball and dance. He was also a member of Good Kids Mad City, an anti-violence group in Chicago, Baltimore, and DC that started after the Parkland shooting. Delmonte was fatally struck on Sept 5th in a drive by shooting. He was walking to the store after dropping his brother off at basketball practice.
