There were few surprises during this year’s Academy Awards nominations ceremony, but at least one film made Oscars history.

Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture, making it the first superhero movie to ever earn a Best Picture nod. The Dark Knight not being nominated for Best Picture in 2009 is largely regarded as one of the ceremony’s biggest snubs, so it’s fitting that a decade later, a superhero movie finally got its due. The film also picked up nominations for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Costume Design.

Much like the Golden Globes, films like Vice, The Favourite, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Green Book also picked up their fair share of nominations. Both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz earned nominations for Actress in a Supporting Role for their work in The Favourite, and Olivia Colman also earned a nomination for Actress in a Leading Role for her work in the film. Rami Malek picked up a Actor in a Leading Role nod for his work in the Freddy Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
