In the latest NowThis Reports, we spoke with two women who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria. Ya Kaka is 19 years old. She was kidnapped when she was 15 by Boko Haram. Hauwa is 18 years old. She was kidnapped when she was 14. In 2014, Hauwa and Ya Kaka were kidnapped from their homes in the town of Bama in Borno State, Nigeria. Boko Haram, a terrorist organization based in northeast Nigeria, claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. According to a recent report, 17,000 Nigerians have gone missing from their homes in 2018 alone. Over 7,000 of them are children.

‘When Boko Haram started in Bama a close friend to my older brother came to the house with other armed insugents looking for him, because he refused to join them. They didn’t find my brother. He told me to follow them to the bush; they were going to marry me. My father and my stepmother were there. My father objected, he said, ‘I will not follow them to the bush,’ so they brought out a sharp knife, they held my father and sliced his throat. Then my stepmother jumped to protest the killing of my father, they also overpowered her and did the same to her. So they killed the two of them and took me away. I met about 300 other girls being detained.’

In 2014, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from their school in Chibok, bringing international attention to the kidnapping crisis in Nigeria. Some of the girls were released after negotiations. But thousands more remained in captivity. In March of 2018, Ya Kaka and Hauwa were ready to tell their story.
