Steve Burrows: ‘Basically it all started when my Mom went in for a routine partial hip replacement’
This comedian wanted to show how broken America’s healthcare system is through his mother.
‘My uncle’s a doctor, my aunt’s a nurse, and they both said basically brain damage is not a known risk factor for hip surgery which seems obvious and then we were like She was supposed to be up and walking the next day. And It became clear as we investigated that every step of the way there were errors occurred from surgery to the transfer to the ICU to this eICU thing that they’ve got, this electronic ICU and essentially it all came down to ‘Who’s in charge of my Mom’s care?’
That was 10 years and I’ve been on a mad search for the last 10 years to find out why that happened. What happened and why.’
Steve Burrows worked in comedy for 20 years as a writer, director, and performer. His new film, ‘Bleed Out,’ which debuts Dec 17 on HBO, takes a detour from those comedic roots and shows his family’s frustrating 10-year journey to get answers.
According to the documentary, 1 out of 4 patients in
the US is harmed by medical error.It’s also the third leading cause of death in the US.
‘We have not even begun to recognize the country’s third leading cause of death: medical care gone wrong. The medical profession needs to be held accountable for the errors.
These are our costs: $421,000. Meds. Health insurance. Taxes. All roads lead to the insurance company. Their whole plan is to drag this out as long as they can.
I’ve been fighting insurance companies in one form or another for ten years. I’m doing it right now with my mother.’
