This nonprofit fashion company hires people from local homeless shelters to help sew coats to give out to those in need. Based in Detroit, Michigan, it’s called The Empowerment Plan and it provides full-time employment and training to its employees so they can earn a stable income and regain their independence. Employees also get access to GED courses, financial literacy classes, and help in professional development. The Empowerment Plan was founded by Veronika Scott when she was a college student. She designed a coat that converts into a sleeping bag as well as an over-the-shoulder bag when not in use. The Empowerment Plan has produced and distributed 30,000 coats all over the world and pulled 60 families out of homelessness.
