Almost 200 schools in South Australia will be closed tomorrow morning as the state’s public school teachers confirm they will walk off the job.
For the first time in a decade, teachers will stop work from the start of the school day until 12:15pm — following a breakdown in enterprise bargaining negotiations between teachers and the SA Government.
The Department for Education today confirmed the school closures, with 180 schools to close their doors.
The department said about 80 per cent of schools would be operating as normal or with modified learning programs.
Schools and preschools will notify parents and carers about the closures.
Earlier this week Australia Education Union SA president Howard Spreadbury said “an overwhelming majority” of union members supported taking action.
“Our members don’t take industrial action lightly.”
Mr Spreadbury said teachers wanted more resources to support their work and their students’ learning environments.
“[It shows] how concerned they are at the Government not taking notice of some of the very sensible provisions they’ve put on the table through us and enterprise bargaining.”
A list of school closures was released by the department this morning.
