Queensland firefighters have rescued and revived a Brisbane chihuahua puppy after she became stuck in the mechanism of a recliner chair.

The pup was hanging from inside the chair when firefighters arrived at the Brisbane unit block.

Firefighter Keith Hanson said he feared the dog was dead.

“When we arrived it was suspended by its neck and we thought it was deceased,” he said.

“It was very raw for the owner and his friend and they were very upset and distraught as the dog was basically one of their children.”

The couple had only had the pup Raven Rinna Venus Nebitt-Schuman (Raven for short) for a few weeks.

It’s understood the chihuahua liked crawling under the recliner and was underneath when someone sat in it and pulled the mechanism.

“As we prized her out we thought we could see some signs of life with her tongue and eyes flickering,” Mr Hanson said.

“We pumped her chest with our fingers and got her oxygen and we thought after a couple of minutes, ‘this dog is starting to breathe’,” he said.

“We decided to do a mercy dash in the fire truck and take her to the 24-hour emergency vet.

“She was in the back of the truck and as we just about got to the vet we hit the gutter and all of a sudden the dog’s head popped up and her eyes were open and signs looked very good at that stage.”

It was the first time the station officer had given a dog CPR.

“It was very unusual … but between us we’ve probably got a long list of pulling dogs out of various interesting locations but dogs are fairly resilient,” he said.
