After spending time in prison for robbery and fraud offenses, Michael Zaki Smith was released and began working with young people to help ensure that they did not end up in prison as he had at a young age. For the past four years Smith worked with the Newark School System through The Future Project.

But in Dec 2017, routine fingerprinting turned up his record to the NJ Department of Education which resulted in the state’s Dept of Education sending Smith a letter telling him he was permanently disqualified from working in NJ schools. He was then forced to stop working, despite support from the school administration.

Smith is advocating to change those laws regarding people who are coming home from prison, who need to work, and want to work, saying, “We need to make this a little more human than what exits now.”
