This show is perfect for anyone who is awkward and horny. “Chewing Gum” centers around Tracy, who is from a super religious family. Despite her bible-thumping upbringing, she is desperate to lose her virginity. But since she hasn’t been taught about anything by way of flirting, family planning and sexual anatomy, she’s forced to learn the hard way, while trying to court men. Despite the struggles, she manages to find a few romantic prospects and keep chugging through her immense awkwardness with Beyonce as her inspiration.
Michaela Coel is the show’s creator, writer and lead actress, who combines awkwardness, anxiety as well as uncomfortable sexual situations to create her comedy.
Though the show is certainly raunchy and a bit slap-stick it’s also really smart and socially aware. Through its use of absurd comedy, it delivers messages about race, socioeconomic status and sexual education. Fans of the show “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” would likely appreciate this zaney, female-led series — you know, if you can get past the unsavory sexual elements and a little cousin flirting.
The show is into its second season, but the entire series is available to watch on Netflix, so get comfortable and get ready to be equal parts enchanted and uncomfortable.
