Here’s why this progressive, women-led Bollywood movie is the change the industry needs.

There are plenty of iconic Bollywood films like “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” — but “Veere Di Wedding” is a completely different kind of Bollywood film.

The movie has four female leads who question society’s expectations of them. Their names are Kalindi, Avni, Sakshi, and Meera and they each deal with very relatable problems — like pressure from their parents to get married, feeling stuck in relationships, and being a commitment-phobe.

The film’s script and themes have been pretty polarizing for featuring casual sex, an openly gay couple, divorce, drinking, and masturbation. But, despite the drama, the film is definitely significant for having the courage to venture into uncharted Bollywood territory. The aforementioned themes have been presented in plenty of movies that have male leads — but woman should be able to have fun, enjoy their friendships, and explore their sexuality just as much as men can.

The movie is also breaking a ton of records, and was one of the top 5 openers or 2018, coming in third. It also hit about $8 million in under a week. Though femme-friendly Bollywood films have existed in the past, they haven’t had the narrative style that “Veere Di Wedding” does. So check out the talked-about film and cast in theaters, if you’re curious about the hype.
