Last week, Christo took over the London art world with his large-scale installation The London Mastaba, consisting of 7,506 oil barrels shaped in a pyramid floating on Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park. But this week all eyes in the British capital turn to Masterpiece London and Mayfair Art Weekend. Masterpiece London covers a wide range of art, design, furniture, and jewelry, attracting collectors of every stripe and budget over the next seven days. To make London even more swinging this week, the city’s local galleries are putting up some of their best work for the fifth edition of Mayfair Art Weekend. So, let’s take a look at what we have to recommend at the moment.

You can’t go wrong with Carol Bove at David Zwirner, where the sculptor presents a range of large-scale works in her signature, tubular style. The show spans two floors of the gallery, offering visitors plenty of chances to experience Bove’s investigations of materiality and form up close and personally—just resist the urge to clamber over the work like you’re at a playground, no matter how tempting. For fresh inventive painting, Holly Coulis at Simon Lee is a great bet. Her still life compositions exist in neatly ordered, flattened spaces, offering an idiosyncratic approach to the genre that’s punched up by Coulis’ delightful sorbet palette. Then, be sure to stop by Sophia Contemporary Gallery, where Swedish artist Veronica Brovall is serving up fierce ceramic and steel pieces full of texture and personality. The titular work in the exhibition, Wear the Heat, is particularly memorable and exudes a powerful presence.
