1000s of Nazis Stripped Naked & Shot For Burning 690 Serbs Alive

Narrator: Marchand Steenkamp.
About the story: During the Second World War, Yugoslavia became one of the most brutal battlegrounds of Nazi occupation, partisan resistance, and collaborationist forces. Among the many atrocities committed during this period was the Kriva Reka massacre, one of the lesser-known but horrifying crimes carried out by German SS troops in occupied Serbia. In October 1942, German forces launched Operation Kopaonik, a military operation aimed at destroying resistance forces operating in the mountainous Kopaonik region of Serbia. The operation was primarily carried out by the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen, a Waffen-SS unit composed largely of ethnic Germans known as Volksdeutsche. The division had gained a reputation for brutal anti-partisan warfare and harsh reprisals against civilians suspected of supporting resistance fighters.
During the operation, SS troops entered the small Serbian village of Kriva Reka, accusing the local population of assisting Yugoslav resistance forces, including both Partisans and Chetniks. What followed was a brutal act of collective punishment. German SS soldiers forced dozens of villagers—men, women, children, and elderly residents—into the local Orthodox church. Once the victims were inside, the doors were locked. Explosives were placed around the building and detonated, destroying the church and killing many of those trapped inside. Survivors of the explosion were burned alive in the flames, while those who attempted to escape the burning building were shot by SS soldiers. The massacre left the village devastated and became one of the most tragic examples of Nazi reprisals against civilians in occupied Yugoslavia. Like many similar atrocities committed during anti-partisan operations, the crime was justified by German authorities as retaliation for resistance activity. After the war, some of those responsible for crimes committed by the Prinz Eugen Division were investigated and prosecuted for war crimes. The Kriva Reka massacre remains a grim reminder of the brutal nature of Nazi occupation policies in the Balkans and the immense suffering endured by civilians during the conflict.
